Converting Grids to GeoTiff Format in HEC-FIA

When working with large terrain files in HEC-FIA, it's essential to be aware of the memory requirements for drawing the terrain in a map window. This process can consume a significant percentage of available memory allocated to HEC-FIA. 'Window grids yes or no'

To convert your grid data to GeoTiff format, follow these steps: From the Study Tree, right-click on the Terrain Grids folder and select Add Terrain Model from the shortcut menu. Open the browser that appears, and navigate to your desired location.

Note that the terrain file is created at the same location as the original non-GeoTiff grid. The converted data will be displayed in the map window, and the name of the terrain file will appear under the Terrain Grids folder on the Study Tree.

During the conversion process, a progress dialog box will open, displaying the conversion progress. This process may take several minutes depending on the size of your grid.

If HEC-FIA cannot convert your provided terrain data, you have two options: import the terrain without converting it or use a geographic information systems (GIS) software to convert the gridded data to GeoTiff format.

It's crucial to note that if your supplied grid uses an unsupported projected or geographic coordinate reference system, the conversion to GeoTiff will fail. Additionally, HEC-FIA does not copy terrain files to the maps directory; you must manually copy them if you want to include them with your final project.

The recommended format for gridded data in HEC-FIA is GeoTiff, and users are advised to convert other formats to this standard. HEC-FIA accepts terrain data in various formats, including SMRMP (Segmented Multi-Resolution Multi-Parameter) grid format (.smrmp).
